[[陽成天皇]]の第1皇子で、父帝の譲位後に生まれた。母は[[藤原遠長]]の娘。同母弟に[[元平親王]]。異母兄は[[源清蔭]]。妻室には、[[神祇官|神祇伯]][[藤原邦隆]]女・[[修子内親王]]（[[醍醐天皇]]皇女）・[[誨子内親王]]（[[宇多天皇]]皇女）らがいる。子に佐材王・佐時王・佐頼王・佐兼王・源佐芸・源佐平・源佐親らがいた。<br />

[[延喜]]3年（[[903年]]）及び延喜7年に、当年巡給により年給を賜る。延長7年（[[929年]]）10月、彼の四十の算賀に際して妻の修子内親王は[[紀貫之]]に[[屏風歌]]を作らせた。[[承平 (日本)|承平]]6年（[[936年]]）3月、[[右大臣]][[藤原仲平]]らともに[[醍醐寺]]に塔の心柱を施入した。天慶6年7月26日に薨去。<br />
