外洋域や[[淡水]]に住む[[底生生物]]で、[[ヨーロッパ]]から[[中東]]にかけ、[[北海]]や[[バルト海]]、[[黒海]]、[[カスピ海]]、[[アラル海]]に生息する。また[[アイルランド]]、[[アメリカ合衆国]]、[[モロッコ]]、[[マダガスカル]]、[[チュニジア]]、[[ニュージーランド]]、[[カナダ]]、[[スペイン]]にも人為的に持ち込まれている。<br />

==特徴==<br />
全長は45–50cm。形態的には[[ローチ (コイ科)|ローチ]]と非常によく似ているため、しばしば混同されるが、目の色が黄色でなく深紅色であることや[[背びれ]]の筋が8-9本と若干少ないことで見分けられる。さらにややこしいことに、これらの種は[[交雑]]して雑種を作ることもできる。<br />
