== 概要 ==<br />
[[非電化]]・[[単線]]の路線で、[[首都圏 (日本)|首都圏]]にありながら駅舎や車両など古くからの雰囲気を残している。そのため近年では[[テレビコマーシャル]]や[[テレビドラマ]]、[[カラオケ]]等の[[撮影]]で使用されることが多い。[[踏切]]には、電鈴式[[踏切警報機#警報音発生器|踏切警報機]]が残っている。また警報機・[[遮断機]]がない第4種踏切が51か所残っている。[[自動列車停止装置|ATS]]による[[閉塞 (鉄道)|自動閉塞式]]区間は五井駅 - 上総牛久駅間のみの路線全体の41.9%に限られている。<br />

1990年代後半からの10年間で乗客が急減した。2000年代では、多少減少幅が緩やかになったがやはり乗客減少傾向にある。<br />

== 歴史 ==<br />
当初は[[安房郡]]小湊町（現在の[[鴨川市]]の一部）を目指して着工された。工事は[[鉄道連隊|大日本帝国陸軍鉄道連隊]]の鉄道敷設訓練の一環としての性格もあった。<br />

[[1917年]]（大正6年）に会社を設立したが建設資金調達に苦心し、伝を頼り[[安田善次郎]]に出資を依頼するため陳情団が東京を訪れる。安田は利益を上げる見込みのないローカル線への出資を承諾し、[[1924年]]（大正13年）には[[安田財閥]]の持株比率が6割を超える<ref>『ちばの鉄道一世紀』(p208)より。</ref>。安田財閥の資金を元に、同年[[ボールドウィン・ロコモティブ・ワークス|ボールドウィン社]]より蒸気機関車を2台（[[国鉄3030形蒸気機関車#小湊鉄道|1号・2号]]）を購入、翌年の運転に備えた<ref name="房総発見100">産経新聞社千葉総局『房総発見100』、崙書房出版、平成10年、176頁</ref>。このとき購入した機関車は、1号車（拓本番号57776）、2号車（拓本番号57777）ともに小湊鉄道五井駅に保存、展示されている。<br />
